It’s inevitable, the strawberries were red and the melon looked great, but with that first bite- disappointment, they just didn’t have any flavor. Throwing them away or even composting them still cost you about $5 ☹. But wait! There are a variety of ways to still get the nutrition from the fruit while not having to choke it down. As Mary Poppins sang, “a spoon full of sugar makes the medicine go down”; but there are so many other options as well and not all of them include sweeteners.
Here are some ways to salvage the not so flavorful, yet still nutritious fruit:
Fruit popsicles-just puree in a blender and freeze in cups with a stick or spoon for easy handling. Add sweetener if you like- either way it’s refreshing on a hot day.
Fruit smoothies- mixed with other ingredients you won’t even know the difference
Fruit flavored lemonade. I have mixed regular lemonade with blended melon (they’re mostly water anyway), for a vitamin and fiber packed drink.
Do the above and add white wine or vodka and viola, you’ve invented a craft cocktail.
Apples, Peaches, Nectarines, and others can be washed, sliced, seeded and placed in a microwave safe bowl with a tablespoon of water or fruit juice, sprinkle of cinnamon, and sweetener if you like. Microwave for a minute or two and ,boom, an easy yummy baked treat.
These are just few ways to quickly use up fruit, but there are countless other ways besides these. Let your imagination soar.
